On January 27, Eliana Carraça presented a seminar titled "The influence of physical activity on eating behavior" as part of the doctoral program in Human Movement at FMH. The talk described the influence of physical activity on physiological and psychological processes of eating behaviors, and was attended by 20 doctoral students at FMH.
PANO at the 10th National Conference on Health Psychology
PANO was represented at the 10th National Conference on Health Psychology in Porto (February 6-8th). Marta Marques facilitated a workshop on "Introduction to systematic reviews and meta-analyses in Health Psychology", and presented the FCT-funded project "An Open-Access Repository of Self-Regulation Measures for Exercise, Eating, and Weight Control". Marta Marques appointed co-editor of The European Health Psychology (EHP)
Marta Marques was appointed co-editor of The European Health Psychology (EHP), the official bulletin of the European Health Psychological Society. The EHP publishes a variety of scientific contributions such as reflections on professional items, methodological issues and current changes and directions in health psychology.
III Galician-Portuguese Conference of Physical Activity and Sport’s Psychology
Between November 22-23rd, the III Galician-Portuguese Conference of Physical Activity and Sport’s Psychology / XIV Conference of the Portuguese Society of Sport Psychology took place in Maia, Portugal. The PANO research group was represented at the International Sport & Exercise Nutrition Conference 2013 on December 17-19th, in Newcastle, England. ACSM’s Behavioral Aspects of Physical Activity and Exercise
A new book titled “ACSM’s Behavioral Aspects of Physical Activity and Exercise” was recently published. It provides information for practitioners and students on how to communicate to and motivate individuals to become more active and describes theories, techniques, and strategies for the promotion of exercise and physical activity behaviors. Pedro Teixeira is a contributor on the chapter “Communication Skills to Elicit Physical Activity Behavior Change: How to Talk to the Client”. More details HERE.
Prof. Jennifer La Guardia at PANO research group
Prof. Jennifer La Guardia, a clinical psychologist with an expertise in motivation and emotion regulation, has joined the PANO research group. She comes from the University of Rochester Medical Center where she was a Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Senior Research Associate in the Center for Community Health's Healthy Living Center. She uses Self-Determination Theory to design interventions to help people navigate lifestyle health behavior change, and she will participate in designing the EuroFIT intervention.
A research team from the UK, Netherlands, Norway, and Portugal, including Prof. Pedro Teixeira, was awarded nearly 6 million € to study physical activity and health in middle-aged men. European Football Fans in Training (EuroFIT) is 5-year study that will target male football fans at risk to participate in a lifestyle change program at their local clubs (FC Porto, Sporting CP and SL Benfica) in order to improve eating habits, increase activity and reduce sedentary time. The project kicks off in November 2013.
WHO European Ministerial Conference on Nutrition and Noncommunicable Diseases in the Context of Health 2020
On behalf of the International Society for Behavioral Nutrition and Physical Activity (ISBNPA), Pedro Teixeira attended the WHO European Ministerial Conference on Nutrition and Noncommunicable Diseases in the Context of Health 2020, on July 4-5th in Vienna, Austria. This conference brought together health ministers, experts and representatives of civil society and intergovernmental organizations with the purpose of discussing policies on diet, nutrition and physical activity to address noncommunicable diseases.
PANO at the 13th World Congress of Sport Psychology
The PANO research group was represented at the 13th World Congress of Sport Psychology, on July 21-26th, in Beijing, China. Pedro Teixeira participated with a presentation titled “Promoting lasting weight control based on self-determination theory” in the context of a symposium named “Health behavior change interventions in real life: Are we moving forward?”. PANO at the 27th European Health Psychology Conference
PANO was represented at the 27th European Health Psychology Conference in Bordeaux (July 17-20th). Marta Marques participated with a presentation titled "Long-term results of a self-regulation based physical activity intervention for chronic fatigue patients" and a poster titled "Self-regulation mediators of success in obesity interventions: A systematic review for the SPOTLIGHT project". Seminar "Self-regulation of health behavior: Why do we do what we do?"
Maarten Vansteenkiste presented a seminar at FMH titled “Self-regulation of health behavior: Why do we do what we do?”on July 10th. The talk described the application of self-determination theory to health behaviors, and was attended by over 50 people, including 26 doctoral students at FMH.
PANO at the 5th International Conference on Self-Determination Theory
The PANO research group participated in the 5th International Conference on Self-Determination Theory in Rochester, between June 27-30th. With the purpose of better understanding and engaging human motivation, this conference brings together experts from across the world. Pedro Teixeira presented the keynote lecture “Self-determination theory and motivational interviewing: Where to from here?”. A workshop for healthcare professionals titled “Physical activity, eating behavior, and weight control” was offered by Pedro Teixeira, Marlene Silva, Eliana Carraça and Marta Marques. Additionally, the PoEMA (Promotion of Exercise, Motivation and Autonomy) study was first presented in a free communication by Marlene Silva. More information about this conference HERE.
On the 12th Annual Meeting of the International Society for Behavioral Nutrition and Physical Activity in Ghent, Belgium, Pedro Teixeira officially started his term as President of the Society. He will oversee an Executive Committee of ten people, which also includes António Palmeira, starting a three-year term as Member-at-Large. The mission of the ISBNPA is to stimulate, promote and advocate innovative research and policy in the area of behavioral nutrition and physical activity toward the betterment of human health worldwide.
