NoHoW kick-off meeting

Between March 4-6, the kick-off meeting of the European project NoHoW (Evidence-based ICT Tools for Weight Loss Maintenance; H2020-PHC-2014 SEP-210140063) took place in London. Pedro Teixeira, António Palmeira and Inês Santos participated in the meeting of this project that, over the next five years, will test whether ICT-based delivery of theory- and evidence-based behavior change techniques can be effective for weight loss maintenance. Between March 22-25, several online and print media and broadcast news delivered the conclusions of a PANO's research study. The study lead by Inês Santos, Ana Andrade and Pedro Teixeira, published in the journal Acta Médica Portuguesa concluded that more than half of Portuguese women and about one-third of men are actively trying to control their weight, using behavioral strategies which are generally consistent with public health recommendations. On March 24th, the Faculty of Human Kinetics - University of Lisbon (FMH-UL) hosted the International Seminar on "Motivate Active Healthy Lifestyles: From Behavioral Science to Behavior Change and Self-regulation", organized by the CIPER - Self-regulation Group (FMH-UL). The seminar brought together national and international experts on health behavior change science, featuring keynote presentations by Profs. Susan Michie and Robert West, among others. The seminar was attended by over 160 researchers, students, and professionals from across the country. More information HERE.

On March 25, Marlene Silva and Hugo Pereira (on behalf of FMH) and representatives of FC Porto, SL Benfica and Sporting CP met in London with representatives of other participating clubs (e.g., Manchester City, Arsenal FC, PSV Eindhoven) for preparatory work of the EuroFIT project. The meeting, which took place at Emirates Stadium (Arsenal FC), aimed at setting the study timeline, discuss recruitment and implementation procedures, and plan the EuroFIT sessions and overall program.

PANO articles in BMC Medicine

PANO researchers recently authored or co-authored new articles published in BMC Medicine, the British Journal of Sports Medicine, and Obesity. The studies focus on key research topics of the group and are available for download HERE.

On April 27th, the Conference on Team Sports: Health and Performance took place in ISMAI, Maia. Pedro Teixeira presented the lecture "The European Project EuroFIT: the Supporter Trains and the Club (FCP, SLB and SCP) Supports".

Life&Style Collaboration

FMH has recently resumed a regular collaboration with the online version of newspaper PÚBLICO (Life&Style section). The articles, written by PANO members, are mostly focused on behavioral issues in obesity, physical activity, diet, and health.

In a public event on May 21, FC Porto, Sporting CP, and SL Benfica signed formal partnership agreements with FMH. Prof. Pedro Teixeira gave a presentation about the project to an audience that included researchers, government and sporting officials, former athletes, and FMH staff and students. The three clubs will deliver the EuroFIT programme on their stadia starting in October 2015.

PANO was represented at the XIV Congress of Nutrition and Food (Portuguese Nutritionists Association) in Lisbon (May 21-22). Hugo Pereira presented a talk intitled "The role of exercise in weight management" in the context of nutrition and physical activity.

On May 29, Marlene Silva participated in a Symposium titled "Heart diseases and lifestyles", promoted by the Portuguese Foundation of Cardiology.
